Fidel Tukel enjoys the opportunity to make a positive difference
in young people’s lives. A trainer for an under-18 girls rugby sevens team, as
well as a regular volunteer trainer for youths at his local gym, Fidel Tukel is
continually rewarded by the chance to be a voice of inspiration and positive
influence to those facing the numerous challenges of growing up.
Recent studies have shown youth mentorship to have a significant
impact on young people’s lives, particularly those more at risk for running
away from home, abusing drugs and dropping out of school. Those youths who
receive one-on-one mentorship from a trusted adult tend to:
--be less likely to drop out of school, abuse drugs or get
involved in physical altercations.
--develop better, more resilient self-esteem that lasts
throughout their lives.
--perform better academically, athletically and
professionally.
In short, the true value of youth mentorship seems to be in its
ability to help tear down barriers; those often standing in the way of the
youth’s potential.
